The campground has 25 30/50 amp electric, water and sewer for RV’s (most occupied by annual campers) and a primitive area for tents, in a meadow near a pond. An RV is also available for rent on a nightly basis. Also a stone and log lodge with rooms, apartments, a bunk room and dining. Heated swimming pool with adjoining pool house that houses a beer bar, bath house, redwood sauna, & 8 man hot tub.

Directions: Interstate 81 to Exit 36. Drive north on Route 172 toward Baileyton to the Shell Station Truck Stop. From the truck stop, travel 2 mile, turn right at wide gravel drive, proceed through gate, follow driveway all the way to the main lodge approximately 3/4 mile.

Evaluation

A short drive from I-81 quickly landed us at a beautiful spot on the edge of in the Smokey Mountains. Be sure to mark two miles from the Shell Station as there is no sign, mailbox or anything else to mark the entrance, just a wide gravel driveway on the right. After pulling up to the gate and calling up to the lodge the gate was remotely opened. When traveling with any type of trailer, the staff asks that you pull into your reserved site, which is located right near the gate, instead of pulling up to the Lodge which is about ¾ of a mile up a steep hill and has limited turn around area.

We checked in at the Lodge and got acquainted with a couple of the staff before returning to our site to set up. Although the site was a pull through we had a bit of a challenge getting situated and ended up needing to drive the left side of the trailer on to 4×6 blocks to get level. The facility is equipped with Wi-Fi which we were told had recently been hit by lightning; so it did not work much of the time. We had a great deal of difficulty with our AT&T data connection and when we went to set up our satellite dish our compass went crazy. The pole right next to our RV had a large magnetic transformer on it which played havoc with our gadgets.

The RV area consists of 25 sites in an open oval area with trees around the perimeter. Each site has full hook ups with 22 sites occupied by permanent site holders and 1 by the owners. A new area further back on the property and up a hill is of similar design and has been under construction for three years. By the look of things I estimate that the new sites should be ready for next season.

The property essentially has two tenting areas. The first is in a mostly sunny, grassy area across the creek from the RV sites. This primitive tenting spot is next to a parking area and is mostly level with room for several tents. The other primitive tenting area is located in a shady creek valley that runs from just below a pond which is downhill from the Lodge to the bottom of the hill almost to the pool area. This is definitely the spot for you if you like a very rustic feel when camping. A cart is available to push your gear up the path to your site.

For those of you who desire more conventional accommodations Timberfell has three different buildings, the Lodge, the Barn, and the Annex, as well as several cabins for rent. A variety of housing is available from a bunk house to a rather elaborate suite. Bathroom facilities are shared by most of these accommodations but breakfast and dinner are included with all. Campers can opt in for meals for an extra charge.

We sat for dinner one evening and had a very enjoyable experience. We started with appetizers and conversation with the other guests out on the porch. We then moved inside and enjoyed a fresh salad, an entree consisting of chicken, a potato and a vegetable. Afterwards, we were served dessert with coffee.

The convenience of lunch at the pool side bar is also available. When we checked into this one afternoon we were told our choices were either a frozen burrito or frozen Philly cheese steak heated up in the microwave, served with chips and a soda for $7.00. We went back to the RV and made sandwiches.

The pool is located near the bottom of the hill in the creek valley. It is a beautiful location amongst the trees yet it gets good sunshine most of the day. After the concrete pool deck runs out several layers of wooden decking have been added all around. The decking is well stocked with chairs of differing varieties. The unevenness of the deck is showing its age but appears to still be providing a safe place for the boys to lounge and show off their stuff. A very rickety looking structure stands on the opposite end of the pool from the pool house and a short distance in front of the pool side bar. We were told it is used for lighting or for a movie screen during special occasions. I am sure that even on cool days the men are “out in their glory” as the temperature at the pool area is always hot and the bump and grind music plays all day. Men come and go from their rooms, the steam sauna, dry sauna, and the showers. Not many are simply interested in deepening their tans.

The Tavern is located not far from the pool area and is housed in a geodesic dome. Timberfell’s night club is open on weekends for drinking, (they serve beer only, but bring your own cup filled with your choice) dancing, playing pool or meeting someone for a little more intimate play. From what we understand the night’s activities are dictated by the mood of the guests. The venue was nice enough for a Lodge/Campground but don’t go expecting resort digs.

We had a very enjoyable and quiet week at Timberfell. The majority of the guests we saw were locals in on a day pass, but there were always a couple of room guests and the occasional tent camper. The weekend brought in some perms into the RV area. Special events weekends are typically “sold out and wild”. The staff at Timberfell left a lasting impression on us. The guys worked so well together, were always friendly, and helpful, and seemed to genuinely care about the guests. This is one place that you can go that you will get whatever you are looking for and quite possibly a whole lot more.

Directions: From I-85 take Route 17 South at EXIT No. 173. Continue along Route 17 South, passing through Royston. Continue along Route 17 until you reach Bowman. Which has a four way stop with a flashing red light. At the four-way stop, turn left, cross the rail road tracks, then go two miles to the next intersection. Turn right onto Pulliam Mill Road. Then go approximately four miles to 2311 Pulliam Mill Road. There are no signs. Look for the blue house and blue mailbox with a green reflective house number.

Evaluation

After a nice drive through the country from I-85 we find the address without difficulty and pull into the gravel courtyard. The side door to the house is the entrance to the registration office. The office is cozy with a very small assortment of items for sale. We are welcomed by Robert, who checks us in and kindly answers our questions. After entering the code we pass through the gate and then by the storage area containing several RV’s, our site is just ahead on the right. We pull in, get out of our truck and begin sizing up the situation. A couple small but welcome trees are poorly situated for our needs. A very nice guy comes over introducing himself as the grounds keeper and after a few minutes of conversation, suggests that he and one of the residents can take us for a tour on the golf cart to look for a better spot. The guys deliver us back at our rig after the tour and we decide that we will move one spot over and endure the full sun. We don’t know how well our AC unit will keep up in 100 degree heat, but we are near the pool and the main shower house.

A large percentage of the RV sites are annuals leaving 15 or 20 for transients. The field we settle in is set up for 30 or 50 amp connections while the more wooded sites only accommodate 30 amps. All the RV sites have water but no septic connections. Apparently, most of the land the campground is on does not perk making it impractical to enlarge the septic system. The restrooms and only a very few of the rental cabins have indoor plumbing which makes staying here a little more challenging. Even so many say they would not consider going anywhere else. The remainder of the woods and down by the stream is proliferated with tent sites. Relatively speaking few of the tent sites have any utilities, the majority is primitive.

A variety of rental cabins are available on the property with accommodations that should fit the needs of most. These structures are reasonably new with the exception of the main cabin that is rented out by the room with shared common space. This cabin was on the property at the time it was bought for campground development, it does have indoor plumbing, and other than being in the woods that’s about all it has going for it.

The shower house next to the main cabin looks to be of the same vintage as the cabin and is in dire need of some TLC. The challenges of cash flow are a part of most small businesses and often set the stage for some very difficult decisions; however this shower house is long overdue for a makeover, especially in light of the minimal septic system on the property requiring 99% of campers to use the facilities provided. In contrast to this shower house, the one near our RV site has had renovations recently completed and is the polar opposite of the other. It was done with a rustic contemporary feel with new paint, floors, and modern fixtures. The gang shower has a very nice natural tile floor done in river rock colors. Private facilities for anyone not comfortable with sharing are located at the end of the building. On one side of the building an outdoor shower area has been provided.Rental storage boxes are located along the opposite side of the building where camping gear and such can be stored to reduce baggage on subsequent trips; a convenient feature offered by few campgrounds. The dump station is also conveniently located here with ample room to pull out of the way. The third shower house is located at the pool. It falls somewhere in between the others in terms of the aesthetic nature, yet provides its basic function.

The pool area excelled beyond others we have seen. Both the pool and the hot tub were crystal clear and well taken care of. Ample lounges and chairs were provided and arranged on terraced decking. The eight man hot tub is housed under an open sided gazebo. Overlooking the pool are the club house, weight room and café. It appeared that at one time the pool area had a sound system which has now fallen into disrepair. Restoring this system would be a good idea. The volume and directional nature required of a boom box for all to hear are poorly suited to an outdoor pool environment.

From the time we arrived at this campground until we pulled up our landing gear to leave we felt very much a part of the activities. We were invited to play volleyball in the pool, bingo in the club house, to a party at one of the annual resident’s sites, and the community bonfire at the fire ring by the pool. This large fire ring which is surrounded by benches provided a great place to enjoy an enormous fire and meet up with fellow campers.

Before our stay came to a close two annual residents took us for a more detailed tour of the campground on their golf cart. We learned a lot about the campground from these guys, but more so we experienced the cohesiveness and dedication of the community to maintain an environment for people to come and enjoy themselves. Ron, who is one of the owners and the general manager of the campground stopped by and chatted with us for a while. Two memorable points Ron made were; this campground was probably not a good place to bring a new or otherwise fragile relationship and he expressed a very genuine commitment to continue operating the campground in the way the founder, his deceased brother Terry, intended it be run, to the best of his ability, for as long as he was physically able. This is how he honors his love for his brother and the community that meant so much to him.

Evaluation

Away from the interstate highway and the sound of traffic, but not to far off the beaten track this secluded getaway is a great place to escape from the everyday game and be yourself. Attitudes are checked at the gate and the very diverse group of people all coexist in peaceful surroundings without many rules or the typical infringements that we all typically endure in our daily routines.

Once you travel down the gravel driveway and through the gate you will arrive at the main house which serves as the office, main shower and restroom facility, and the owners living quarters. Once inside we were greeted by John, one of the owners, and checked in. The office is very basic and offers a few novelty items for sale. While we were in the office the other owner Tom came in and introduced himself, in what we discovered to be his typical outgoing, exuberant and personable style. He then excused himself because he was busy replacing a failed water pump and told us that he would catch up with us when he was done to take us on a tour of the property. John then showed us to our site.

Our site was located near the main house on top of the hill with beautiful views in all directions. Set up went smoothly as we had plenty of room to maneuver and the site was mostly level. The site was equipped with 30 and 50 amp connections, septic, and after a patient wait while Tom, Jim, and Randy got the water pump replaced, water. Annual sites are equipped with Dish Network satellite feeds.

The property has been carefully laid out and not over developed which gives it a very natural and rustic feel. Most of the RV sites are spread throughout the woods and open spaces while some are terraced on a grassy hillside. The tenting sites are all located under the cover of the canopy of trees in some very beautiful and private spots. Some of the annual site holders have elected to take part in the u-build-it program. This provides a credit back to the member for annual dues with respect to the cost of the structure and also requires that all building plans be approved by “In The Woods” which; amongst other things assures the aesthetic quality of the structure.

For those not bringing their own accommodations we saw a variety of lodging choices available. They range from a bunk house sharing a kitchen with another separate large bedroom that has a bathroom en-suite, to several sleeper cabins which all have a microwave and refrigerator.

The amenities at “In The Woods” are not glamorous but certainly meet the needs of the average camper. The shower and restroom facilities at the main house have a contemporary rustic quality that is very inviting. The wall at the front of the house is 2/3’s windows revealing the gang showers and vanity area while the toilets are separated within their own stalls. Down the hill from the main house is the pool/clubhouse area. The pool is 20×40 with a concrete deck. Nice landscaping frames the area and the deck is well stocked with lounges, chairs, and tables with umbrellas. Some of these items were in disrepair, but as the pool is scheduled for a major upgrade I imagine these will be replaced at the same time. Music is fed out to the pool from the clubhouses sound system with speakers placed all around so the volume is never too high in one spot. Also at one end of the pool is a structure used for a video screen which is referred to as “Screen on the Green”. This is a great feature, but what I don’t understand is why you wouldn’t call this something like “video float” or the “swim-n-movies” when the movies are viewed from the pool. The clubhouse is not large but it has sofas and chairs, TV’s, a video screen, karaoke equipment, and a full kitchen big enough to prepare for an event or allow several campers to fix dinner at the same time. The clubhouse has two restrooms, one private and the other semi-private. These have not been updated in a while but are all functional with separate shower surrounds and toilet stalls. The last area that I need to talk about, but far from the least is the “Training Camp”. Off the trail, down in the woods you can find an area that has a variety of permanent wooden structures. Some have camouflage screening, some don’t. Some have straps while others have hook eyes and chains. This is a private area where you may choose to go engage in some familiar activity or go and explore something new. Either way discretion is the norm. “What happens at Training Camp stays at Training Camp”.

More so than any fabulous set of amenities, what truly sets one place apart from another is the character or mood it possesses. In The Woods is no slacker in the service that they provide but they are outstanding at providing an inviting and comfortable environment. Tom and John meet, greet and take everybody on tours and will check in to be sure everything is ok. You will never be at a loss to find someone if you need something. Special events occur regularly and are imaginative. The community of regulars is a great group of guys that welcomed us without pretence. No aggressive advances or public displays ever occurred. We really enjoyed our stay at this five year old campground. A lot has been done in a short time and I am sure there is a lot more to come.

Evaluation

We made a day trip from where we were staying to see this resort because we were under the impression that men were not permitted to stay. Au contraire! We were warmly greeted by our hostess and welcomed by every resident that we encountered. Here is the deal, all are welcome any time. This is an equal rights community. The only thing is that the club house is owned and operated by women in the community and they are only willing to share the facility between 11:00AM and 1:00 PM daily. This kind of reminds me of when I had swim team practice at the Jewish Community Center. The facility is pristine and I am sure it is a pleasure to use if only for short periods of time. The problem I would have is how I manage my time between the pool, hot tub, lying in the sun overlooking the lake and its waterfall, playing pickle ball, working out in the exercise room, working in the pottery room or doing any number of other activities in the multi purpose area and library.

The residents of “Carefree” have a first class manicured resort. All of the home and RV sites are well landscaped. I see a lot of pride in the community based on the entire 50 acres did not have a thing out of place or looking as if it needed repair. The community does house two sorts of co-op ventures. One is a two lot parcel that has been fenced and landscaped for a gathering pet exercise spot. The other is a house that was purchased by the art club and is used as a studio and also has accommodations for the clubs guests.

The rentals that are available in the community are privately owned and managed by the resident staff. If you have an RV or are looking for a vacation rental I am sure that the women at “Carefree” will do whatever they can to match your needs with their availabilities. We were very impressed with the warm and professional attention we got during our tour and visit, and we are confident that you will not receive anything less.

Evaluation

One traffic light east of I-75 on Fruitville Rd. in Sarasota, Fl. This four torch resort is convenient to all and accessible to the largest of rigs. From the time you are greeted at the welcome center until you pull out of the gate at the end of your stay; you will be treated to the warm and friendly customer service of the entire staff.

This very large, progressive resort has an ample supply of sites whether you are looking to buy or rent a park model or for a site to park your coach or trailer. Tenting is not permitted, except from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Check in at this resort could not be any easier; we didn’t even have to get out of the truck. We just pulled up to the Welcome Center/Gate, which is staffed 24/7, and checked in. By the time we were done a staff member was waiting in a golf cart to escort us to our site. Being a newcomer to this enormous property the escort service proved to be helpful. The roads are rather narrow and some wind around in a peculiar way. We got settled in to our site without any difficulties. Our site was a deluxe with crushed shell driveway and a concrete patio. All of the sites are of similar dimensions the difference between them is that standard sites are all grass, premium is grass with a patio, and both of these are in very sunny locations while deluxe sites are shadier. Pull through sites are also available on sunny sites with an understandably longer dimension than the others. All of the sites have 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, cable TV and a picnic table. Campfires are prohibited by local ordinance. Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, but we found the connection to be slow (probably overburdened), and the signal fluctuated a lot. This system, as many others, is most likely fine for checking e-mail and doing light surfing, but for doing things like paying bills online and maintaining a website, as we do, you will want an alternative connection. The resort does have a computer room where you can use an Ethernet connection if you can be productive in a workstation environment.

The pet exercise area was located close to our site and had two separate runs for the dogs to do their thing off leash. Campers participate in plastic grocery bag recycling so that pet owners have bags to clean up after their pet. Restrooms were a short walk from our site and included a nice pet bathing area outside. The facilities are modern, large, and spacious. I became rather disgruntled on Saturday morning after we had packed up the rig to go home and the bath house had paper strewn on the floor and none on the roll. A gross oversight for such a large well staffed resort.

This resort has amenities galore; unless you are into some sort of way off beat type of recreation or craft you will find something of interest to pass your time. Most of the activities such as; miniature golf, shuffle board, bocce ball, and the gorgeous swimming pool with in ground hot tub and whirlpool are located towards the front of the property. Spread through the park you will find; a lapidary, wood working shop, card room, church, computer room, tennis courts, putting greens, a place to wash your rig, and a nice pond for fishing. If you are anything like me you will be exhausted after a day full of all these activities. So, don’t worry about dinner, just head to the restaurant by the pool for the daily special or dish of your choice.

We found this resort to be well managed and maintained. We felt very welcome and comfortable during our stay. The campers that we met were friendly. We understand that the resort hosts an annual gay camping club’s rally, and that all parties involved in the organization are very happy with the venue.

The things that fell below our expectations were; the dirty bathroom without toilet paper, the lack of an onsite store of any kind, and that tenting is prohibited during the peak season. These in my book are not deal breakers and I would recommend this resort to anyone interested in this type of facility.

Directions: From I-75; Exit # 329 (Old# 66), West State Road 44, approx. 9 miles; cross river, Left Boy Scout Road (South) and follow signs to Camp David.

Evaluation

The one mile drive down the narrow, packed sand, private road from the pavement became more of a journey as we negotiated the craters and passed the occasional oncoming vehicle. But, after we turned the corner which hosted the sign “no turn around” and the jungle moved closer in on the road, we felt a sense of adventure and knew we were going to enjoy the benefits of being in the middle of nowhere. We were admitted onto the property, passing through a stockade style fence and gate. We were met by a cheerful employee, given a quick tour of the rather small campground and then gladly supported as we carefully positioned ourselves into our site so that we could open two slides between a tree and the utility post.

By the time we had set up we had already met many of our fellow campers. This friendly atmosphere continued throughout our stay, whether either party was wearing clothes or not. We were invited to poker, bingo, a potluck, and to chat around a campfire. Community was the theme for this campground. Fellow campers and staff were as friendly as I could never imagine, without being intrusive.

The campground consisted of permanent campers, RV’s of all shapes and sizes and tenters. For folks that don’t have any of these, the campground offers rental RV’s and bunk rooms. Lots of folks come in just for the day, usually on the weekend. The campsites are all nestled in between two ponds and the swimming pool. People roam about all of these areas throughout the day. The management’s only requests were; to carry a towel with you to sit on and cover up with if they announced an outside person was entering the grounds, and to use common sense in your encounters with people. The sexual energy was quite high on the weekends with lots of people out on the cruising trail around the back pond. I didn’t however; see anyone using the accoutrement that is permanently installed around the lake. The video room seemed to be popular. The hot tub and the rec hall attracted folks in the evening for relaxation, conversation, card games, bingo and large screen TV. The office has a VHS and DVD lending library, which had new arrivals while we were there, to enjoy in the privacy of your own trailer. Saturdays and Sundays the guys cook up a great breakfast and lunch right by the pool and the price is very affordable.

While this campground is showing its age, everything is in good working order and very clean. I especially enjoyed a hot shower in their large, clean, gang style shower with great water pressure. All of the essential amenities are offered and the atmosphere was fantastic. The management and staff are doing a great job at making this a very comfortable and sought after destination. They stay at or near capacity, and have a long waiting list for permanent sites. The property is small and it is by no means a resort, and everybody likes it that way.
